And fast by hanging in a golden Chain/ This pendant world!
The short story: I'm back.
The slightly longer story: for the last few years, I have been working on developing a tabletop game of my own, and only now have I felt that it was good enough to share - at least in a form strong enough to playtest.
It's called Pendant World, and it is an urban fantasy skirmish game that draws heavily on real-world scary stories and mythologies to construct its own mythos. Picking the right moment to wield your magic and monstrous creatures is actually important, mechanically speaking, because the table is littered with innocent bystanders who were just out for a night on the town (or whatever), and any overt manifestations are going to send them scrambling for cover - and for their smartphone cameras.
Pendant World has a number of factions, all representing major thematic elements from urban fantasy.
Beleaguered Man - a ragtag collection of hunters, practitioners (think mages), and a small PMC banding together to push back against the things that go bump in the night.
Ravenous Beyond - a faction of demons from a Miltonian abyss that want nothing more than to destroy creation. They can't access it directly, though, so they rely on their cults, smaller manifestations, and the greed of human criminal organizations to work their will.
The Fair Ones - the jealous entities from beyond the boundaries of the real world, whether they be faeries or horrors from the depths of the human psyche. This faction also includes mortal humans, but uses them in a way that a person would use a shovel or any other tool.
The Infernal Machine - a high-tech faction; an organized conglomerate that has identified the strangeness in the world and begun to create technological equivalents. All for their own gain, of course.
Already Forgotten - a faction of the dead and long-since forgotten, all returned to rewrite the false stories that have been written about them - by blood and fire, if necessary.
Ten Thousand Wings - some very sensitive equipment picked up a frequency it should not have, and this faction goes about carrying out its will. Human converts and angelic manifestations work together to spread the new gospel of the god of flesh.
Thin and Bare - a collection of mercenary elements, all of whom have a vested interest in some part of creation - or in wanting to destroy it. Most of these mercenaries do not work for specific factions; rather, they attach themselves to existing groups that share interests with them (through the use of unit tags).
If any of this piques your interest, I invite you to take a look - and maybe even playtest a game or two with your group. I'd love to hear your feedback.
This is a folder that contains all documents you need to playtest Pendant World, at least for now. I am still working on the other factions, and - of course - I will be adding to existing factions as profiles are tested and balanced.
Stay tuned for more articles on the game, including some battle reports!
